Social nudity is the practice of nudity in relatively public settings not restricted by gender. This occurs both in public spaces and on commercial property , such as at a naturist resort. Some isolated indigenous nudity still exists in the tropics , though this way of life is highly endangered, as is male nude swimming in public, which used to be very commonplace in Western civilization. Modern European-style naturism began around the turn of the 20th century in British India and Northern Germany , and it was brought to the United States by German immigrants in the s. The usage and definition of terms relating to social nudity varies geographically and historically. Many liberal democracies have legal restrictions on nudism. This article argues that when public nudity does not pose a health threat which it seldom does , such restrictions are unjust. To vindicate this claim, I start by showing that there are two weighty interests served by the freedom to be naked in public. Second, public nudity has expressive value; apart from being a constitutive element of various spiritual and religious worldviews, public nudity is frequently used to protest perceived social and political evils.
Clothing laws vary considerably around the world. In most countries, there are no laws which prescribe what clothing is required to be worn. However, the community standards of clothing are set indirectly by way of prosecution of those who wear something that is not socially approved. Those people who wear insufficient clothing can be prosecuted in many countries under various offences termed indecent exposure , public indecency or other descriptions.
